Gold alloys

In some cases, base metals are added to the precious metals in order to harden them and change their color → yellow gold, white gold, red gold, alloy metals → silver, copper, palladium, nickel, zinc.

Every metal has certain properties that are either strengthened or minimized by adding other metals. In the case of gold, due to the low hardness, the change in color, the change in the melting point, the density and the tensile strength as well as for reasons of cost, an alloy with other metals is made.

The number of gold alloys is almost impossible to keep track of nowadays. The jewelry industry, coinage and especially dental technology have developed special variations in recent years, which also differ slightly from country to country. Almost all color variants of gold alloys, regardless of the fineness, are achieved with the two additional metals silver and copper. In technical language, this alloy is called red gold, although the percentages of the three metals can vary.

White gold, an alloy of nickel and palladium, caught on around the turn of the century. At that time, the expensive platinum was supposed to be replaced by a similarly colored metal. Palladium white gold is mainly made up of gold, palladium and silver and is more expensive than nickel white gold, which is mostly made up of gold, nickel and copper.

Thaigold, which is widespread in Thailand and consists of 965 gold and an undefined remainder, is exotic. In contrast, Nordic gold is not a gold alloy, but an alloy made of 89% copper, 5% aluminum and zinc and 1% tin. It cannot be magnetized and is used to produce euro coins with the denominations of 50, 20 and 10 euro cents.

By definition, gold in Germany with a fineness of 333 or more can be referred to as gold. In Great Britain and Switzerland the legal limit is 375 and in Austria 250 fineness (also called quarter gold).
