China Panda

1) Recognition – Name – Country of Origin
The China Panda has been issued by the China Mint since 1982. The coin is named after its annually changing motif, depicting one or two pandas.

2) Coin Description
The obverse side of the coin features one or two pandas (depending on the year) - the national symbol. The denomination in yuan is also displayed on this side. The reverse side of the coin showcases the Temple of Heaven. Due to their high popularity, the coins are delivered in soft plastic packaging, as they are often sought after by collectors.

3) Face Value – Legal Tender – Value
The China Panda is a bullion coin (investment coin). It was given a face value starting in 1983, and the denomination was increased in 2001 (see the table below). In 2016, the coin switched to the metric weight system. For instance, the 1 oz (31.1 g) coin became 30 grams, the 1/2 oz (15.55 g) became 15 grams, and so on. The coin's popularity as a collectible has contributed to its value being slightly higher than comparable gold bullion coins.

5) Special Features – Minting Years – History – Mintage
The China Panda was initially minted in gold in 1982 without a face value. From the beginning, it was issued in denominations ranging from 1/10 ounce to 1 ounce. Starting in 1983, the China Pandas were accompanied by a face value indication. The 1/20 ounce denomination was added. In 1984, 12-ounce proof-quality Gold Pandas were introduced, minted until 1988, then suspended in 1989, and reintroduced from 1990 to 1995. In 1997, 1999-2002, and 2005, a 1-kilogram version of the Gold Panda was minted. Since 2006, the coin has been issued by the China Gold Coin Incorporation. Notably, the editions from 1982 to 1984, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2003 are highly sought after by collectors.
