China Panda
1) Recognition – Name – Country of Origin
The China Panda coin has been issued by the China Mint since 1982. The annually changing motif of one or two pandas gives the coin its name. It is among the most popular investment coins.
2) Coin Description
On the obverse side of the coin, one or two pandas (depending on the year) – the national symbol – are depicted. The face value, fineness, and fine weight are also displayed there. On the reverse side of the coin, the Temple of Heaven, along with the minting year and inscriptions, is featured. Since the inception of the Panda series, the design has been minimally altered in three different variations. The coin's edge is reeded and therefore does not bear any inscriptions.
3) Face Value – Legal Tender – Value
The China Panda is a bullion coin (investment coin). It holds legal tender status for the Chinese Panda in China. As is customary with investment coins, the intrinsic value of silver far exceeds the indicated face values.

5) Special Features – Minting Years – History – Mintage
From 1983 to 1985, the China Panda had a weight of only 27 g and a fineness of 900/1000. Starting with the 1987 Panda coin, the standard weight of one ounce for silver coins was chosen, and the fineness was increased to 999/1000. The half China Panda was only offered in the years 1993 to 1998. The 5 and 12 ounce Pandas were also minted only during limited timeframes (see table above).
Silver kilogram Pandas have been issued in limited quantities since 1998.
Particularly among collectors, the proof-quality 10 Yuan pieces are highly popular. The mints responsible for production are the Shenzhen Guoba Mint, the Shanghai Mint, and the Shenyang Mint.
