South Africa Krugerrand

The South African Mint will, next year, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the popular gold coin Krugerrand, offer not only a silver version of the coin but also a platinum edition and new denominations in gold.

The Krugerrand, the world's most well-known gold investment coin, was first minted in South Africa in 1967 and has so far been available in weights of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz of gold. The new Silver Krugerrand will reportedly have a weight of 1 oz.

The characteristic springbok motif, which has adorned Krugerrand coins for 50 years now, can also be seen on the silver coin. The design remains unchanged, except for the indication of the face value of 1 Rand at the bottom edge of the coin. On the obverse side, as usual, the minting year, the inscription "Fine Silver," and the name of the coin can be found. Additionally, the number 50, framed by a small circle, is recognizable.

On the other side of the silver coin, the portrait of the Boer General and later President of the Transvaal Republic, Paul Kruger, is depicted as customary. Furthermore, the issuing country is inscribed in Afrikaans ("Suid Afrika") and English ("South Africa").

The silver Krugerrand will be available in two versions with a fineness of 999: as a bullion coin with brilliant uncirculated finish in a mintage of 500,000 coins, and as a proof quality (polished plate) in a mintage of 15,000 pieces.
