1) Popularity – Names – Country of Origin

The coin commonly referred to as the American Eagle has been minted by the U.S. Mint since 1986 and is one of the most traded bullion coins worldwide. The name of the coin is derived from the eagle depicted on the reverse side of the coin. The American Eagle was the first pure silver coin of the United States.

2) Coin Description

The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand. The word "LIBERTY" is written in capital letters above her head. The year of minting is depicted around the height of her left knee, written in Roman numerals from 1986 to 1991. In her left hand, she holds an olive branch. The male eagle on the reverse side of the coin also holds an olive branch in its talons. This eagle flies over a nest with the female eagle and two chicks. On the left side of the eagle, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (Latin for "Out of Many, One") is inscribed. Opposite that, the words "IN GOD WE TRUST" are stamped. The top of the coin bears the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the bottom displays the weight and face value; in the case of a full ounce, it's "1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR." The edge of the coin is reeded.

5) Special Features – Mint Years – History – Mintage

The American Eagle is primarily minted in the Brilliant Uncirculated version. A limited mintage is also produced in Proof quality. To distinguish these issues, they carry a Mint Mark of the respective mint on the left side, near the foot of the eagle. "P" stands for Philadelphia, "S" for San Francisco, and "W" for West Point. The rarity of the series is the 1995 American Eagle with the "W" Mintmark, issued alongside the "10th Anniversary American Gold Eagle Proof Set." This set was only produced 30,000 times. Additionally, in 2006, another special issue was released, the "20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set." The eagle motif on this coin is shiny, while the background is frosted. The mintage was 250,000, and the "P" Mintmark was used.
